Dagun and Lagoon Pocket
A pretty little “10-house town”, Dagun village is the centre of a very diverse agricultural industry.
Driving through the hills of rich red soil you will see pineapples, bananas, mangoes, lychees, stonefruit, avocados, citrus, macadamias, pecans, flowers and a salad-bowl of brightly coloured vegetables.
The river flats are dotted with dairy and beef herds, and the local independent dairy Cooloola Milk produces its own milk and cheeses from a pure herd of beautiful Jersey cows.
Dagun village itself has a well-resourced primary school set in shady grounds, and a growers’ market organised by the Dagun community each Saturday afternoon to coincide with the weekly arrival of the steam train.
The old-style mill Mary Valley Timbers is here, using only hardwood to provide structural and furniture timbers and sleepers for use on local and interstate railway lines and for landscaping.
Dagun’s exciting venture is the development of the Dagun Station Precinct, where you can wander through the natural history walk, discovering examples of three different habitats to be found in the Mary Valley, from lowland scrub to rainforest.
There is even a maze here, and the kids will love finding their way through 16 different garden beds planted in the colours of the rainbow.
A botanical garden gives visitors the chance to see local agricultural crops close at hand.
The Good Sheds Wine Cellar offers tastings of Stuart Range Estate wines and locally produced cheese, as well as flavoured nuts, exotic cooking oils and a range of local crafts.
You will find
